Where to Find an Irish Wool Sweater

Defined Tag:

Finding a quality Irish wool sweater may require visiting several stores before finding the right one. There are many sweaters that claim to be Irish wool, but in reality, they are a mix of wool and other fabrics. A traditional Irish wool sweater is thick, scratchy, and heavy when on the body. These sweaters are usually one or two colors, but the colors are muted. This is because dyes can be very expensive and the people who knit the sweaters usually cannot afford this expense. This is another sign that the sweater is authentic. Mass produced sweaters may use a blend of different wools in order to save money.

An Irish wool sweater will last for many years if it is cared for properly. The sweater should be dry cleaned. Getting the wool wet will cause pilling and shrinkage. Once the sweater has shrunk, it will not look good on anyone. Investing in a quality Irish wool sweater also means paying some money each year to have it cleaned properly. In the summer months, it is important to store the sweater correctly so that moths and other insects do not create holes in the fabric. Store the sweater in a sealed plastic bag and place a few moth balls either in the bag or on top of the bag. A dresser that is made of cedar will also keep the moths away.

An Irish wool sweater can be itchy and irritate the skin of some people. If this happens, then donating the Irish wool sweater may be a person’s only choice. The fibers can cause a person’s allergies to act up as well. But for those who are not allergic to wool, this type of sweater is very comfortable. It can be worn with almost anything and will last for a long time when properly cared for.
